Mountain rescue volunteers have this afternoon saved the day for a couple of spectators flying up from London for tonight's Huddersfield Giants game.

The passengers and pilot of a helicopter found themselves stranded after the pilot was forced to land in the middle of nowhere due to bad weather.

The two men were being flown up for tonight's clash with Wigan Warriors as guests of Giants owner Ken Davy.

But conditions were so bad the pilot made the decision to land in remote countryside south of Holmfirth.

It is thought the men are wealthy London executives.

“It was like a pea-souper up there,” Scott Roberts from Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team explained.

“We were called at 3pm after a helicopter had to lay down due to the bad weather about a mile south of the Woodhead Pass.

“They were safe and there were no issues with the helicopter they just didn’t know where they were.

“We’ve collected the passengers and the pilot and they still made it to the Giants game on time.”

The two men and the pilot are due to stay in Huddersfield overnight and will collect the stricken helicopter tomorrow.
