FIREFIGHTERS used beaters and backpacks filled with water to douse a blaze in a wood.

A section of North Dean Wood, off Stainland Road near Elland, was found burning at 9.15pm last night.

The wood was a long way from a hydrant so firefighters from Elland and Brighouse carried the 20-litre water packs to the scene to spray water on the flames.

They were there for about 90 minutes. A section of wood measuring 150ft by 150ft was damaged.

Crew Manager Mark Warrinder, of Elland fire station, said: "The fire was going up the hill when we arrived so we caught it just in time.

"It must have been started deliberately."
