THERE is a lot of interest in our community fund.

A wide variety of groups have applied for money from the Examiner’s £30,000 Community Cash Giveaway.

But one of the more unusual groups to request cash is Birstall Woodturning Club.

The club has 60 members from all over Kirklees and meets at Alexandra Mills, on Bradford Road in Batley, twice a week.

Members specialise in the art of wood turning – shaping wood as it spins on a lathe.

Once a month, a professional visits the club to give a masterclass.

The club has bid for £900 to spend on a big screen TV or projection screen and camera.

This would be used to ‘zoom’ in on the tools and handiwork of the professionals, allowing every club member a good, close-up view of techniques being demonstrated.

Dave Fligg, vice-chairman, said: “It can be difficult to see at the moment and the new equipment would make it a lot easier.”

For the first time in its 13-year history, the club is exhibiting work from members.

The exhibition will run at Batley Library until the end of March.

Groups only have until Friday to bid for up to £900 from the fund, administered by the Community Foundation for Calderdale.

Groups must be run by volunteers, have been operating for 12 months and have an annual income of less than £20,000.

To apply, people can either use the form in the paper to apply or go to our website – www.examiner.co.uk
