TEENAGERS can earn cash by giving police the word on robbers.

Youngsters could potentially earn more cash telling Crimestoppers who is responsible for street robberies than the criminals make carrying out offences.

And the beauty of the scheme is that the money can be paid over without the person giving the information ever having to give their name.

The Word On The Street scheme is being run through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The campaign has been devised specifically to target youngsters aged from 12 to 18 to show them there is more to gain on the right side of the law.

Chief Supt Howard Crowther, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "We've had great success with similar campaigns such as Dob In A Dealer, but this one was a little different as it focuses primarily on teenagers who quite often don't want to listen to the police.

"More often than not they would prefer to pass on information over the phone rather than face to face.

"This allows them to make the call without anyone, including the police, ever knowing who called."

He added: "The profits of robbery are often used to fund other crimes such as drugs.

"It's essential we put a stop to this and provide a safe and secure community for all and get these kids back on to the right track.

"The involvement of a number of people will be as a result of bullying and peer pressure so it's important we show them what a crime-free life has to offer and provide them with an anonymous method of passing on information to ensure those responsible are taken off our streets."

He added: "I want to return to the days when people felt safe to go out in the evening and although we're moving in the right direction, we're not there yet."

Calls to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 are anonymous.

They are free from a landline phone and will not show on an itemised bill.

They are not taped or traced and no police will call.
