A HUDDERSFIELD author will host two workshops at Holmfirth Library.

Dawn Rodgers, who is a member of Huddersfield Authors Circle, is hosting one workshop for children and one for adults at the library to launch her new reference book, The Anti-Definitionary.

The book is a guide to new and unusual words for writers, including exercises in how to invent your own words.

Dawn wrote the book with the help of her niece and nephew.

She said: “We were just bored on rainy Sundays and thought up a game to invent words. After that, it got very addictive.”

The children’s workshop will be held this Saturday from 10am to noon.

Children will create, draw or model their own monsters, before writing a description of them.

The adult workshop, Beyond Words, will be held next Wednesday from 7pm.

Dawn has enjoyed writing success, reaching the final of Pulp Idol 2008 – the literary equivalent of Pop Idol – in May.

Authors read their work at the contest during Liverpool’s Writing On The Wall festival.

All 12 finalists were given an intensive writing retreat weekend in Wales.

Dawn has had her work published in poetry anthologies and magazines.

She writes in a variety of styles, including science fiction, children’s books and even a knitting book for Goths.

Tickets for the workshops are free and are available from Holmfirth Library.
