WORK has started on a new health centre in Kirkburton.

The £2m building at Shelley Lane will include spacious consulting rooms, large treatment rooms for use by nurses and a minor operations suite.

It is envisaged it will be opened in autumn 2005.

Space will also be provided for health visitors and specialist nursing teams.

In addition, there will be extra training room for new doctors, including seminar and health education facilities.

General practitioner Dr John Priestman said: "The new health centre will provide excellent facilities for modern primary health care and will set the scene for health care for the next century.

"People's health needs are now being met much more effectively with high-quality services in their own community."

Kevin Holder, chief executive of Huddersfield Central and South Huddersfield NHS Primary Care Trusts, added: "This development is part of a wider estates strategy for the improvement of primary care facilities and services across the Huddersfield area.

"We are investing in high-quality healthcare for local people as part of our commitment to raise the standards and quality of health treatment."
