ALMOST two weeks after a massive hole appeared underneath a main road, the council is still making repairs.

Complaints about a dip in the pavement on Manchester Road had been made to the authority, but on January 6 workmen were amazed to discover a huge hole beneath the road surface stretching the entire width of the A62.

Workmen have been at the scene near Slaithwaite since leading to delays in the area.

Initial investigations proved water from an adjoining field had broken a culvert and the resulting erosion had created a cavern underfoot.

Last week the council acknowledged it was a bigger job than they had first expected and assistance was being given to a nearby landowner over the watercourse beneath his land.

Workmen are still at the site.

A spokesman for the council said yesterday: “Work is ongoing to install the underground pipe and resolve the drainage problems on this stretch of road.”
