WORK to restore an area left muddy following the removal of the town’s ice rink has been delayed because of drainage problems.

The grassed area of the Piazza was left looking like a “lunar landscape” after the attraction was removed in January.

Bad weather and heavy machinery had left the spot looking like a muddy, ploughed field.

Kirklees Council apologised to the public about the conditions of the ground.

Notices that have gone up around the shopping complex promise that the land will be re-seeded and returned to grass by spring.

Yesterday a council spokeswoman blamed a drainage problem for the delay, but promised that work will be under way as soon as it is resolved.

She said: “The site looks to have developed a drainage problem and we are working to investigate that issue as soon as possible.

“Once any drainage problems have been resolved we will be able to start work on reinstating the area.

“It is not possible to give a timescale at the moment, but we are very aware of the need for this work to be completed quickly.”
