A COLLAPSED culvert which formed a ‘cavern’ beneath a busy Huddersfield road is still to be repaired.

But work on Manchester Road, Slaithwaite, which had partially collapsed due to the void beneath, has been completed.

Workmen are waiting for better weather to repair the culvert in an adjacent field.

Complaints about a ‘dip’ in the pavement on Manchester Road had been made to the authority, but on January 6 workmen were amazed to discover a huge hole beneath the road surface stretching the entire width of the A62.

Workmen have been at the scene near Slaithwaite since, leading to delays in the area.

Initial investigations proved water from an adjoining field had broken a culvert and the resulting erosion had created a cavern underfoot.

A spokesman for Kirklees Highways said: “The reinstatement to the road was completed on February 7 and the reinstatement to the pipework in the field will be completed when conditions are a bit drier.”
