A BUSY road linking Huddersfield and Wakefield is to close for works.

Wakefield Road will be shut near Horbury Bridge in the evenings from next Saturday.

Highways engineers working for Wakefield Council need to close the busy A642 to carry out resurfacing.

The work is expected to last until March 10, but the closures will only be at night.

The affected stretch is from the river bridge at Horbury to the bottom of Quarry Hill. Diversions will be via Storrs Hill Road.

Andy Kerr, the council's head of highways, said: "The A642 is a very busy road.

"Because of this, there will be no resurfacing done during the morning and evening peak periods.

"But for safety reasons it will be necessary to carry out the work using a combination of traffic signals and road closures.

"The closures will be from 7pm to 7am, when traffic volumes are at their lowest."
