WORLD Book Day will hit Huddersfield once again today.

All over town, readers young and old are celebrating their favourite books and characters in a variety of ways.

In some schools, teachers and pupils are dressing up as book characters.

Yesterday, celebrations started early at The Children’s Bookshop in Lindley, 300 excited youngsters from Rastrick Junior and Infant School and Paddock Junior and Infant School visited to spend the £1 book vouchers they had each received from National Book Tokens Ltd.

All schoolchildren get the vouchers for World Book Day.

They could put the voucher towards an item or choose from a range of special £1 World Book Day books.

The Children’s Bookshop has celebrated World Book Day for the past 11 years.

Proprietor Sonia Benster said: “It has been a really exciting day, we have had bus loads of children in and out all day.

“It has been a huge success. The children have all been lovely, many of them haven’t had the opportunity to visit a bookshop before, so it has been really good for them.

“Even children who don’t have any extra money with them can go away with a book.”

World Book Day is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK and Ireland, World Book Day.

World Book Day is run by UNESCO in partnership with book publishers, book shops, primary and secondary schools and aims to encourage children, young people and adults to pick up a book and read.

It is a worldwide celebration and takes place in over 100 countries across the globe, including Spain and Ireland.

However, while in the UK and Ireland World Book day is celebrated on March 5, most other countries hold their celebrations later on April 23.
