THE hot weather, frayed tempers and the first England World Cup match led to the busiest-ever weekend for police in Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

Officers were staggered by the sheer number of calls that flooded in.

They totalled more than police get on a New Year's Eve, traditionally the busiest few hours of the year.

On average, 443 calls were received each day on Saturday and Sunday, compared to an average of 300 per day for April.

Of these, 247 each day were graded as emergency or priority, as against 143 each day for April.

Domestic violence figured highly and special measures are in place to deal with these incidents quickly.

Chief Inspector Rod Wark, of Kirklees Police, said: "The division has never experienced more than 400 calls before in any 24-hour period.

"We can put the increase down to the warmer weather, which leads to people having more barbecues, spending time in pubs and generally consuming more alcohol.

"This subsequently leads to an increase in domestic arguments that we are called to, as well as fights and assaults.

"The other factor was the England match. Again, a lot of people were having parties at home or drinking in the pub.

"There was a lull in calls during the game, but we did see a distinct increase once the game had finished.

"We had prepared for this and we had extra resources to deal with the increase in the incidents we attended."

Officers in two specially equipped rapid response vehicles concentrate on getting to domestic offence incidents quickly.

The aim is to arrive within 15 minutes and use digital cameras and laptop computers to gather evidence.
