A SRI Lankan school, destroyed by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, has been rebuilt, thanks to help from Elland Rotary Club.

The club, along with 78 Rotary clubs and 100 schools across Yorkshire, raised £200,000 in six months to build a school in Batticaloa.

One of the classrooms at the school for 400 students aged up to 16 will be named Elland. The club raised almost £2,000.

Spokeswoman Hazel Metcalfe said: “We couldn’t have done it without the generosity of Elland people.’’
