CHILDREN'S author Philippa Pearce met young readers during a visit to Lindley library.

Philippa, the author of Tom's Midnight Garden, was there on Wednesday to talk about her writing and to sign books.

Philippa was a scriptwriter and producer for the BBC and an editor for a publishing company before starting to write her own books.

Her first two books drew on her own childhood experiences.

For example, the house where Tom goes to stay with his aunt in Tom's Midnight Garden is the mill house in which Philippa grew up.

Her visit to Lindley is the fourth by top authors in recent weeks. Last month, Eleanor Updale visited the library and Jennifer Donnelly, this year's Carnegie Prize winner, visited in August.

Michael Morpurgo, the Children's Laureate, was there in July.

The visits have been organised by the Kirklees and Calderdale Children's Book Group in conjunction with the Kirklees Library Service and the Children's Book Shop.
