A CONTROVERSIAL flats scheme for older people has been given the go-ahead.

Twenty-six close care apartments for over-55s will be built at the former site of Norcott House in Liversedge.

Kirklees Council’s Heavy Woollen Planning Sub-committee approved the plan on Thursday which includes a three-storey block and a two-storey block.

Thirty-one residents had signed petitions objecting to the plan. They were supported by Clr Margaret Bates, who represents the area on Kirklees.

She said: “I was totally against the proposal so I’m disappointed that the sub-committee approved it.”

The Conservative believes the development is inappropriate.

She said: “There are no three-storey properties in the area so I feel that the taller block will be intrusive for residents whose homes face it. The two-storey block is only two metres from the boundary.”

But Clr Bates said she was not against developing the former nursing home site in principle. She said: “I would have preferred bungalows for older people.”
