YOBS who terrorise their neighbourhoods have been told they will be named and shamed.

That was the pledge from the new Tory Cabinet in charge of Kirklees Council.

They say they will publicise the details of people who are the subject of all anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos).

Previously, individuals have been named only when a case has gone to court.

Now details of offenders will be given to the Press and released within the community in which they live.

Clr Khizar Iqbal, who holds the safer communities portfolio, said: "It is my responsibility to do everything I can to improve our communities and make them safer places in which to live and work.

"If Asbos are to work then our communities have to be our eyes and ears.

"An Asbo has to be a deterrent to the individual and to others.

"If people don't know about an offence or the offender how can it be a deterrent?"

Clr Iqbal, who represents Dewsbury South, said the publicising of the information could have an important impact on community cohesion.

He added: "I will hold my hands up and admit this policy is hardly revolutionary.

"But it is common sense and it is disappointing that it was not implemented by our predecessors."

However, the former deputy leader of the council, Clr John Smithson, hit back.

The Liberal Democrat, who represents the Almondbury ward, said there would be no real difference.

He said that previously when matters reached the Asbo stage details were publicised.

He went on: "It's a fallacious claim and they're just making themselves look silly.

"My response is to say that there are certainly trying to find ways of being different to us and they seem to be struggling and if this is the best they can do.

"Claiming to be different, when in fact it isn't, is pathetic."
