GOOD causes have been handed £116,000 by a building society with roots in Huddersfield.

Yorkshire Building Society’s charitable foundation distributed the cash between 1,160 charities – with each receiving a £100 boost to begin 2012.

During one week last year, the Bradford-based society ran a campaign called Make a Difference Week and called on members of the public to pop into their local branch and nominate their favourite charity or good cause to receive a £100 boost.

The campaign ran across the society’s 178 branches and 94 agencies.

Organisations to benefit range from major charities such as the PDSA to smaller good causes such as local hospices and Scout groups.

The £116,000 donation comes from the foundation, which is largely funded by the society’s Small Change Big Difference scheme.

That enables members to donate the pennies they earn from the interest on their savings accounts each year to the foundation.
