A BUILDING society with roots in Huddersfield has raised a record amount for charity.

Staff and members of the Yorkshire Building Society, which has its origins in the town, have helped raise £175,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society during 2011.

The effort was supported by the Barnsley and Chelsea building societies, which are part of the Bradford-based Yorkshire.

A range of fundraising activities included raffles, sponsored runs and cycles rides, book sales, sponsored leg waxing and bungee jumps!

Former chief executive Iain Cornish, who left the society at the end of 2011, made a sponsored cycle ride from the Bradford head office and the Chelsea’s head office in Cheltenham – covering over 170 miles – to raise almost £11,000.

The sum raised by staff and members was matched penny for penny by the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation – taking the total to £175,000.

Alzheimer’s Society director Liz Showell said: ‘Thanks so much to everyone at Yorkshire Building Society for their hard work and dedication.

“We are especially grateful to the society for matching the funds – their generosity will enable Alzheimer’s Society to support people with dementia and their carers .”
