FERRY passengers could win compensation for delays if a new law is passed.

Yorkshire Euro-MP Linda McAvan is backing plans to give people who travel by boat the same rights that air passengers enjoy.

The Labour woman said: “The European Parliament is determined to ensure the travelling public have adequate protection against excessive delay and cancellations when they are travelling around Europe.”

The new rules, which will come into force in 2012, entitle passengers to compensation if the ferry company is to blame for a significant delay. Passengers will also have the right to food, drink and accommodation.

Mrs McAvan is also pushing for compensation for coach travellers facing cancellations or long delays.

She said: “It’s disappointing that there isn’t yet agreement on extending the rights to coach passengers.

“I see no reason why people who travel by coach should have fewer rights in the face of major delays.”
