Yorkshire First leader Richard Carter is to stand in Dewsbury at the General Election in May.

The former Holmfirth businessman, a co-founder of the party, has just returned to Yorkshire after six years in Norway.

Mr Carter was the 13th Yorkshire First candidate to be selected for seats across the county. Another is former Golcar Labour councillor Paul Salveson in Colne Valley.

The party was formed in April last year and Mr Carter polled 19,000 votes in the European elections just seven weeks later.

The party doesn’t seek independence, just a strong voice for Yorkshire with similar powers to Scotland.

Mr Carter said: “We are a new party with ordinary people united by the belief that Yorkshire can do better.

“We want to build a Yorkshire where all who were born here, or have chosen this great place to live, work or play, are proud to call themselves Yorkshire folk.

“However, we are living in a country that has nine out of the 10 poorest areas in the whole of northern Europe. Three of those are in historic Yorkshire. At the same time London is the richest. That is not good enough.

“It is the national parties that have allowed this situation to arise. And it is now time for real change.”
