A YORKSHIRE politician claims she is on course to land one of the top roles in the European Union.
Diana Wallis is one of three candidates for President of the European Parliament – the equivalent of Speaker of the House of Commons.
The Yorkshire Euro-MP claimed yesterday she was on course to defeat German Social Democrat Martin Schulz and Conservative representative for South-East England Nirj Deva.
The Lib Dem said she was “buoyed” by an online poll showing she received an “astonishing” 67 of the 72 votes cast by members of the public.
“I have made connection with Europe’s citizens a key theme of my campaign and this seems to be resonating with people,” said Ms Wallis.
“I want to create a European Parliament that is ready to engage strongly and positively with the citizens of Europe.”
Euro-MPs will elect a new president on January 17.
