The brother of the Yorkshire Ripper claims the killer faked mental illness to avoid being sent to a maximum security jail.

Serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, now 69, who struck twice in Huddersfield, could be getting moved from Broadmoor psychiatric hospital to prison after medical experts said his mental health had improved.

But his younger brother Carl Sutcliffe, 50, said Peter was never mentally ill and had planned to “make out that he was mad and then he’d get an easy ride”.

Former lorry driver and gravedigger Sutcliffe was given 20 life terms in 1981 after he murdered 13 women and attempted to kill seven more between 1975 and 1980 across Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.

In court Sutcliffe claimed he murdered the women after hearing God tell him to kill sex workers.

One of his victims was Huddersfield prostitute Helen Rytka, whose body was found behind a timber yard in Great Northern Street.

Sutcliffe also tried to kill Oakes teenager Theresa Sykes as she made her way home from a local shop, but she survived.

Carl said Peter never showed any signs of schizophrenia as a child.

“I know he’s been trying to get out of Broadmoor for a while. He’s fed up with it, even though it’s fairly cushy.

“He’s wicked. I don’t care if he’s in prison or in Broadmoor, as long as they never let him out.”

Carl’s views about Sutcliffe’s faked illness were shared by a former Huddersfield detective.

Mr John Stainthorpe, 83, served on the Ripper Squad during his long career with West Yorkshire Police.

He said he has never believed Sutcliffe had a psychiatric illness.

“He was just a plain, evil killer.

“I have always said that I never believed that it was he who thought up this voices from God defence. That was put into his mind by someone.”

A decision about Sutcliffe’s potential move will be made by justice secretary Michael Gove, the Ministry of Justice said.
