Council leaders in Kirklees and Calderdale agreed the neighbouring districts had seen nothing like the Tour de France celebrations.

The Grand Depart started to become a bizarre reality last Wednesday when a pop-up French farm, complete with Bridgette the Jersey cow, appeared overnight in St George’s Square, Huddersfield.

Then two landmarks – Victoria Tower at Castle Hill and Emley Moor mast – were bathed in coloured light.

During the race thousands lined the route and packed spectator hubs in St George’s Square, Holmfirth and at Hebden Bridge.

Kirklees Council leader David Sheard said: “I don’t think we’ve ever seen a weekend quite like it and it’s certainly something that people will remember for a very long time.

“The final triumph of the colourful arrival of the Tour de France will be remembered for decades to come.

Villages and towns along the route turned out in style and in force and this area will have contributed a large part of the total number of Yorkshire race spectators.”

Meanwhile, Calderdale leader Tim Swift said: “The whole weekend of the Tour was absolutely incredible but although I may be biased, Calderdale really stood out, with some great crowds and our stunning scenery.

“We all knew the Tour would be a huge event for the region but I think it surpassed everyone’s already high expectations.

“I know Sunday July 6 2014 will be a day that I, and many others, will never forget.”
