Football's coming home ... to Yorkshire.

Six of the England World Cup squad were born and bred in God's own county and plenty of folk are suggesting the team's success at this year's competition can be put down to its Yorkshire roots.

Towering defender Harry Maguire, himself from Sheffield, recently told Gabby Logan of the BBC: "There's so many of lads here from Yorkshire, it's quite surreal. I think we're mainly defenders which says a lot about Yorkshire. We're not the most talented but we're really hard."

Gabby asked the 25-year-old if there was enough Yorkshire tea to go around.

He replied: "I think we've got a good supply of tea. If it ran out I'm sure there would be a lot of unhappy players so it's on the fitness coaches to keep us happy."

As well as Maguire, Jamie Vardy, John Stones, Kyle Walker, Fabian Delph and Danny Rose can be claimed as products of Yorkshire.

And Yorkshire Tea have not missed the chance to celebrate the county's contribution either.

The Yorkshire connection does not stop at the players or even their beverages of choice. Yorkshire tea - produced by Taylors of Harrogate - shares its home with the waistcoated one himself.

England manager Gareth Southgate recently revealed he lives in Harrogate in North Yorkshire and told football journalist Henry Winter that, after the World Cup, he intends to wind down by returning to God's own country and taking his dogs for a run. His dogs - for the purpose of this article - are assumed to be whippets.

People have pointed out as well that this is not the first time Yorkshire has been the driving force behind the country's international sporting glory.

In the 2012 Olympics in London Yorkshire athletes finished with seven golds medals, two silver and three bronzes - good enough for twelfth in the medal tables overall .

It was revealed ahead of the round of 16 tie that Columbia forward Radamel Falcao had roots in Yorkshire. His great-grandfather lived in Selby before he moved to Columbia and met Falcao's great-grandmother.

Now, some have started to wonder which other World Cup stars may be connected to Yorkshire in some way.
