Detectives are investigating the mystery death of a woman found collapsed in a residential street.

Police believe families attending a big bonfire night event at Huddersfield YMCA may hold vital information.

Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said the woman in her 40s was found slumped on grass near some garages in Hubert Street, Salendine Nook.

The woman was found at 11.15am on Saturday and was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where she later died.

“Police enquiries are at an early stage but the woman had no obvious injuries,” said Det Insp Wiseman.

“We do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances but we are treating the death as unexplained at this stage.”

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out on Monday to determine how the woman died.

Detective Inspector Stephanie Wiseman at Huddersfield Police Station.

Det Insp Wiseman added: “While she was found at 11.15am we don’t know how long she had been there.

“The area where she was found is near some garages and there is an area of parkland nearby which goes out towards Huddersfield YMCA.”

Around 2,000 people attended a bonfire and fireworks display at the YMCA at Laund Hill on Friday night and police want people to think back.

“We are sure that if someone saw her collapsed on Friday night they would have raised the alarm but they may have seen something or have information that could be important,” said Det Insp Wiseman.

Police know the identity of the woman but will not release details until relatives have been informed.

The woman, who lived in rented accommodation in Salendine Nook, was only believed to have moved there in September.

She is said to be a British citizen but may have returned from abroad. The woman is in her 40s and is described as having short dark hair and was wearing jeans and a red fleece top and red and white trainers. She had a black handbag with her.

“There’s no suggestion she had been assaulted or anything untoward had happened to her but we hope people can help,” said Det Insp Wiseman.
