READERS have given the new Weekend Examiner the thumbs up.
New figures show sales of the relaunched Saturday edition were up 19% on the previous week.
Examiner editor Roy Wright is delighted that the beefed-up paper – including the Express and Chronicle series – has had such an immediate impact.
“This is fantastic news,’’ he said. “We’ve known for a long time that Saturday’s Examiner needed a boost and these sales figures show we’ve hit the spot.
“People in Huddersfield want news about their community and, hopefully, we’re meeting that need with the Express and Chronicle pullout – plus there’s all the regular Examiner news stories.”
The new 80-page Weekend Examiner was launched last Saturday.
As well as the 24-page Express and Chronicle pullout, the new paper also features a seven-day TV guide.
Roy said: “There’s lots more in it including travel, gardening and quizzes. I hope it’s the kind of product that people will use on Saturday, Sunday and through the week with its seven-day listings. I know that I’m still struggling with the quiz!”
Express and Chronicle editor Chris Burgess is also happy with the first edition.
He said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I think it was a colourful issue, covering our established areas of Holme Valley, Colne Valley and Denby Dale.
“But we’ve also branched out into the village communities of Huddersfield like Lindley, Marsh, Oakes and Almondbury.
“We’re very focused on community news and we hope we give the best coverage around.”
Examiner reader Beverley Little agrees.
She said: “I’m a regular reader of both the Examiner and the Express and Chronicle. I like the new format of the Weekend Examiner. It looks really good.”
