HE has toured the world showcasing his art.

Now a world-renowned sculptor is sharing his latest vision with thousands of people in Huddersfield.

Rob Ward, former Head of Sculpture at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, has designed three pieces which will be taking pride of place at the University of Huddersfield campus for the next six months.

The stainless steel sculptures are architecturally designed to enhance their surroundings.

They are located outside the main entrance to the Universitys Queensgate campus.

That means not only are they on show to all the students, staff and visitors, but also to the thousands of motorists who drive past on Huddersfield ring road.

And the Universitys new Professor of Sculpting, who is to give his inaugural lecture today, admits he looks after them.

Prof Ward, 61, proudly carries polish with him to ensure his sculptures are adequately reflecting their surroundings at all times.

He said: My sculptures are places where the object interacts with the landscape, and people.

For all three pieces I used the same materials but the balls for the piece I have called two were cast in China and shipped over.

The screen is similar to a Chinese screen or a traditional dressing screen but instead of shielding objects beyond it, the material reflects, so it is a play on the function of a screen.

Prof Ward made the sculptures at an industrial premises in Elland.

He added: Sculpture is quite often the last thing people think about when designing an area.

They build buildings and put flagpoles up but dont think about sculpture.

Places like the campus need some kind of cultural dimension and I think these pieces bring that to the campus.

The third piece Prof Ward has created is called the buttress which has been placed next to St Pauls Church on the campus, to enhance the churchs structure.

The unveiling of the sculptures was designed to coincide with Prof Wards inaugural lecture in which he will reflect on what he thinks art means.

Prof Ward, who now lives in Derbyshire, has been a sculptor for more than 40 years and has travelled all over the world to nurture his skills.

He is currently working on a number of projects and had just returned from a trip to China where he has created three bronze sculptures which will be displayed at the Shanghai Sculpture Park.
