Move over Felix the Station Cat.

Huddersfield has a new feline favourite in the form of moggy Smudge.

The four-legged Holmfirth resident is known to sleep in the window of Kaye’s hardware shop on Town Gate, so much so he has his own bed with his name on among the displays.

Black and white tomcat Smudge belongs to the owners of the Daisy Lane Bookshop, but has made a happy second home at the hardware shop, which he frequents every day.

Julia Grenier, who works at Kaye's, said: “Smudge started coming in last year and he is very popular with our customers.”

Keen seamstress Julia, who stitched the bunting hung through Holmfirth for the 2014 Tour de France, has since made two beds for Smudge for him to sit in the shop window.

“When we close he sits on the shop doorstep, and on the weekend he likes to visit the church next door.

“He is a very well known cat in Holmfirth.”

Cheeky Smudge is so well-acquainted with the staff at Kaye’s he even uses the back door staff entrance.

And while the shop was closed for Christmas, Kaye’s staff placed a sign by Smudge’s bed saying ‘while the cat’s away...’, along with figurine mice enjoying a festive tipple.

Smudge also appeared in a video by band the Rival Sons, who played at the Picturedrome last year and were filmed feeding him treats.

And he keeps a beady eye on people using the busy pedestrian crossing in the centre of Holmfirth, right in front of his window.
