A NEW radio station that aims to teach budding young DJs the ropes is now on air.

Radio Paigham, based at Trinity Street, is broadcasting live 24-hours a day on 107.2 FM for the next month and is being manned by young volunteers.

The station, which has broadcast in the summer for the last four years, plays a mixture of bhangra, Punjab and western pop.

Station manager Nisar Smiler said the idea behind the station is to give youngsters something to focus on during the summer.

He said: "The young people come down here and learn all about how to run a radio station.

"Not only does it keep them off the streets it allows them to learn skills which they might be able to use in later life.

"We always have a lot of fun and lots of people really do listen.

"We run competitions all the time and they are very well entered. People are always ringing up the station.

"We are based in Huddersfield, but people as far away as Leeds, Dewsbury, Halifax and Bradford can listen."

Radio Paigham - which means `message' in Urdu - is funded by local business and this year the main sponsor is Connexions mobile phone store, in Bradford Road, Fartown.
