Young Huddersfield entrepreneurs felt the heat when they took part in a Dragon’s Den contest to find the brightest business brains in the town.

A total of 75 people faced the fire at the one day event, which took place at the University of Huddersfield.

Teenagers aged between 16 and 17 from different backgrounds banded together into five teams to try impress a crack team of judges with their presentations, on their ideas for a social action project in aid of a local charity, which all needed £30 to get off the ground.

Managing director of the Huddersfield Giants, Richard Thewlis, Grosvenor Casino sales manager, Vikki Smith and Barclays bank assistant branch manager, Dominic Storey and Pink Link director, Richard Allen were amongst the six strong panel which poured over each presentation with a fine tooth comb before deciding the day’s winners.

All were crowned champions on the day for their excellent persuasion skills, which will raise money for MENCAP, Kirkwood Hospice, Forget me Not Children’s Hospice, Leonard Cheshire and Laura Crane Trust.

They will now host their events on August 31 with a Sunday funday at the Zone, bagpacking at ASDA, a sponsored abseil at Roct and a charity band night at The waterloo bowling club.

Meanwhile, big items and experiences will be sold to the highest bidder at a charity auctioneer evening at The shepherds arms in Cowcliffe on August 29.

It was a fitting grand finale for a three week skills building course, which was organised for the participants by Huddersfield Town FC’s National Citizen Service co-ordinator, Katy Stockdale, who is based at The Zone at St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield.
