SPORTY Huddersfield youngsters have been tackling racism by taking part in a football tournament.

Five under-12s teams from Kirklees took part in the tournament at Newsome Sports College.

The event was organised by the Communities United Project (CUP), a Huddersfield charity which uses sport to divert young people from anti-social behaviour.

The tournament was held to support the Let's Kick Racism Out Of Football campaign, which is being run by the Commission for Racial Equality and the Professional Footballers' Association.

The idea is to give young people from different cultures a common interest.

CUP activity co-ordinator Gareth Hamlet said: "The tournament was a great way to support the campaign. The young people had fun at the same time as learning to identify racism and how to tackle it.

"With activities like this, hopefully young people will be educated about racism and it won't continue in future."

The youngsters received trophies and prizes.
