EDWARD Yates fancied a go at hockey ... and just a few months later helped his team reach the finals of two regional competitions.
The Rastrick Independent School pupil started looking for a club to join after being introduced to the sport at school.
He couldn’t find any teams suitable for his age in school so started looking further afield.
Edward, nine, joined Wakefield Hockey Club’s under 10s team in September and instantly fell in love with the sport.
His dad Max said: “At school they were introduced to different sports and Edward enjoyed playing hockey so much that he asked to carry on playing over the summer.
“Huddersfield doesn’t put out an under 10s team so we went to the club at Wakefield and thought they had a really cracking set-up.
“Edward showed a real aptitude for it and was moved up from the second team to the first team, which is called the Wildcats.”
The youngster, who lives in Shelley, was trusted with the important role of team goalkeeper and has helped the team scoop some big successes this season.
The team were runners-up in Division One of the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League.
They also reached the semi-finals of the North of England Hockey Cup in Leeds after beating other teams in regional heats, and were only beaten to victory on goal difference.
Max said he is proud of his son, even though he has no idea where he has got his talent from.
He said: “He’s not particularly sporty, he just expressed an interest in this and I think if children show a willingness to do any sport they should be encouraged.
“Edward really loves it. It’s quite a skilful game and something that can, to an extent be learned, unlike some other sports.
“People see hockey as a sport for girls and the club has about 20 lads but twice that number in the girls’ teams.
“But it’s quite a physical game and really does suit boys.
“I think Edward also enjoys the whole team spirit of it and getting ready to save goals with his pads and big gloves on.”
The club’s under 14s team is twinned with a hockey club in Holland and Edward’s ambition is to play over there when he is older.
