YOUNG Huddersfield singers have received a choral masterclass.

And it’s all thanks to the Examiner’s Cash Giveaway.

Huddersfield Choral Society won £500 in the Giveaway last March.

And the society used the money – and £500 of its own – to hire renowned national composer and conductor, Alan Simmons, and his Mastersingers choir.

About 60 junior members of the society, aged seven to 19, packed Fartown Methodist Church for a workshop followed by a performance with Mr Simmons and the Mastersingers on February 6.

Susan Wilkinson, the choral society’s musical director and conductor, said: “It’s been excellent.

“We’re absolutely delighted with the money.

“We couldn’t have afforded a nationally-known composer and choir if we hadn’t had the money.

“I would absolutely encourage other organisations to get their bids in for the Cash Giveaway this year.”

The choir rehearses at Almondbury Infant and Nursery School, Longcroft.

This year the Examiner has a huge £50,000 to give away to groups who do valuable work within communities.

The deadline for entries is February 27 – so get your application in as soon as possible.

You can apply online at www.examiner.co.uk/communitycash or pick up an application form at the Examiner reception at Queen Street South.
