TEENAGE soccer stars got a few lessons in safety yesterday.

The Academy students from Huddersfield Town swapped their soccer boots for driving shoes as part of a national campaign to improve safety for young men.

Young men are a high-risk group when it comes to road crashes and the Professional Footballers Association have teamed up with the British School of Motoring (BSM) to educate soccer stars about the need for responsible driving.

Karen Crosland, of the Academy, said: “Young men come under a lot of peer pressure when it comes to cars and driving, and young footballers more so.

“The lads, many of whom are taking driving lessons, got the chance to take a spin around the stadium car park and also had classroom lessons about safety.

“It was an eye-opener for many of them.”

Other soccer clubs have taken up the scheme, including Premiership side Bolton Wanderers.

Students at Honley High School also joined in safe driving lessons in a project by Huddersfield-based Learner Driving Centre.

Staff were at the school to offer practical driving lessons and some theory tests.

It was organised by the Driver Centre’s Ben Morris and teacher Sean Folan.
