HONLEY singer Kirsty Smith is on a winning streak at the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival.

Kirsty, 16, won the coveted Huddersfield Choral Society Rosebowl for Young Singers on Saturday.

She was awarded the rosebowl and £50.

On top of this, she was awarded the Louise Hinchliffe Trophy for being the most promising young singer in vocal classes 64 to 71.

Kirsty qualified to compete in the rosebowl contest after winning the Girls Solo 16&17 Years class.

She added to those two honours on Sunday by winning the highly-regarded Junior Vocal Recital 16-20 Years Dorothy Irwin Prize class.

The Vocal Recital 21 and Over Dorothy Irwin Prize class was won by Bradford woman Christine Quirk.

She was awarded the Mabel Sykes Trophy and £250.

This was Christine's second major honour at the festival.

Her first major award was the Samuel Firth Silver Rose Bowl, which she won on Saturday.

She received a Mrs Sunderland Medal and £100.

Christine, who has been singing for four years, has competed at the Mrs Sunderland festival for three years.

Under the rules of the Dorothy Irwin Prize classes, both Christine and Kirsty must spend their prize money on furthering their musical careers.

Taking second place in the Vocal Recital 21 and Over class was Alexandra Webster, of Leeds.

Alexandra has enjoyed a series of wins in the vocal classes.

She claimed first place in the German Lieder class, the Light Operatic Open class and the Ladies' Operatic Open class.

She also took second place in the British Composer class and third place in the Ladies' Oratorio Open class.
