Youngsters paid tribute to the fallen in a special Remembrance service.

Children from three primary schools placed poppies on war graves in Dewsbury Cemetery.

The event, which included a short service conducted by the Rev Kathy Robertson, saw pupils from St John’s, St Paulinus and Boothroyd schools leave poppies on 103 graves.

Organised by the New Friends of Dewsbury Cemetery, the moving ceremony was part of a project called Not Just a Name.

Volunteers from the group are researching the lives of all those buried in a war grave in the cemetery.

The long-term aim is to publish the stories of all those who died serving their country.

Chairman Simon Reed said the service, which included a rendition of the Last Post, had been well attended.

On the project, he added: “We hope to engage the community and reveal the stories of the people who fought and died through warfare.

“It is essential that people know, respect and remember the lives of the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in both world wars.”

More events are planned by the group which eventually hopes to erect a new war memorial to commemorate all those who lost their lives.
