YOUNGSTERS took part in a reading mission and then triumphed in a competition.
The Reading Mission took place nationwide across the UK this summer, with children choosing six books to read.
Those who completed the reading task could then enter an art and design competition.
Five youngsters won in the competition held at Meltham Library, where 150 children signed up for the reading mission.
Meltham Library customer service officer Carole Dyson said: "The theme of the competition was to design or draw a gadget that could help them or any of the characters they had read about in a tricky situation."
The winner was seven-year-old Esmee Taylor, of South Crosland. She won a family ticket to the Xscape snow adventure centre near Castleford.
The other winners were Meltham C of E School pupils Vicky Atkinson, brothers James and Harry Williams and Ben Parker.
Vicky won a special sea scooter gadget, which drags swimmers through water, James and Harry won cinema tickets and Ben won a swimming voucher.
They were presented with their prizes by police community support officers Keith Hollick and Sam Shaw.
The prizes were organised by Kirklees Children's Reading Development Team.
