YOUNG people were filling a church hall with the sound of music as the second day of a festival got under way today.

Musicians and singers were performing in the 45th Haydn Wood Musical Festival at Linthwaite Methodist Church in Stones Lane.

It is held each year in honour of Slaithwaite-born composer and violinist Haydn Wood.

The festival was held at Slaithwaite Civic Centre until 2001.

This year, more than 140 young people aged under 21 have entered the festival.

They are competing in brass, woodwind, vocal and piano classes, judged by Andrew Stevens.

The finalists from the classes will perform a grand finale concert tonight from 7pm.

Prizes and certificates will also be presented.

Admission is £2 for adults and £1 for children.
