Charity leaders take up Challenge

FUNDRAISERS gathered at Dalton Grange last night to launch this year's huge Examiner Charity Challenge.

Leaders of many Huddersfield charities attended the official launch of the popular sponsored event, which lets people support their favourite causes while getting some fresh air in the Holme Valley.

Mandy Barwick of the West Yorkshire Forget-Me-Not Trust spoke at the launch, advising charity workers on fundraising ideas.

The big day is May 20 when sponsored walkers, cyclists and horse riders will set off from Meltham Sports and Community Centre.

There will also be a two-mile buggy and wheelchair course starting from nearby Blackmoorfoot Reservoir.

Over the years, tens of thousands of pounds has been raised and thousands of people have had lots of fun.

Organiser Bob Armitage, of Huddersfield Lions Club said: "We're hoping that lots of people will get involved because it's a wonderful opportunity to raise money for local charities while doing something pleasurable."

This year there are 12 recommended charities.

But people can also raise money for a cause of their own choosing, such as a scout group or school.

They don't have to be super-fit to take part, with routes catering for all ability levels.

There will be a long walk of 6.8 miles and a shorter one of 4.2 miles.

Cyclists have the option of an 8, 16, 22 or 48 mile course and there will also be a 10-mile horse riding route.

About 850 people took part in last year's event despite terrible weather.

Entry forms will appear in the Examiner regularly over the next few weeks.
