CRIMINALS are coming a cropper in Kirklees thanks to calls to Crimestoppers.

People fed up with crime are calling the freephone number with good-quality information.

This has led to 50 arrests in the district so far this year.

Police say about 450 `excellent' calls have been received, with just the kind of information they need to take action or make more detailed inquiries.

Four in five calls to Crimestoppers are about drug-related crime.

Yorkshire-wide, more than 3,000 calls led to 325 arrests.

The number of calls has risen 15% on last year and arrests have been made for offences of murder, burglary and drugs.

Det Con Russ Conlon, of Kirklees Police Intelligence Unit, said: "The information received from Crimestoppers is hugely beneficial in our fight against crime.

"By anonymously assisting the police you will be assisting your neighbourhood.

"Please continue to assist us. Information you hold may well be the final piece of the jigsaw against an individual that we are targeting."

Det Con Kevin Mosley, from Crimestoppers, said: "The public can give anonymous information about any crime.

"The Government and police want people to call Crimestoppers and take drugs and drug dealers out of your communities.

"The information you give about individuals who are making large amounts of cash from these criminal activities is passed to the police for investigation.

"Thanks to the Proceeds of Crime Act we can take their ill-gotten gains from them."

Information about who is responsible for anti-social behaviour, such as criminal damage, is passed on to Neighbourhood Policing Teams to tackle.

Calls are welcome from youngsters themselves and are always anonymous.

Such calls have led to successful convictions for causing damage by graffiti.
