YOUNG people were organising a protest against Kirklees Council cuts today.

The council plans to cut hundreds of jobs to deal with a funding squeeze.

The Youth Fight for Jobs group was protesting against the cuts at today’s monthly council meeting.

The demonstration was beginning at 5pm outside the University of Huddersfield Students’ Union. Demonstrators were to march round the town centre at 5.30pm before rallying on the steps of Huddersfield Town Hall.

A speaker will be sent in to address the council meeting.

Organiser Gary Bunton said: “These savage cuts would further depress the local economy making it harder for those leaving education to find employment.”
