A HUDDERSFIELD young people’s boxing project is packing the punches.
Rawthorpe Amateur Boxing Club is once again forging a partnership with West Yorkshire Police to help young people channel their energy in a positive way.
The free weekly sessions will be run at the Gas Club in Gasworks Street and attended by police, who are putting their weight behind the scheme.
Rawthorpe Club manager and head coach Mark Reynolds told the Examiner: “This is the second time we have joined forces with the police to offer the free sessions and build on the established partnership.
“It is a great way to get young people doing something active.
“It is all non-contact and helps teach them discipline and control and if they complete the programme they get to have a one-to-one with an experience coach.”
Mark added: “ I know from my own experience that if I had not found boxing when I was younger then I would have gone down the wrong path.
“Boxing is a way of diverting energy and feedback we have had from schools and parents has been encouraging.”
Pc Jon Sturdy and Pcso Gareth Hunt of Huddersfield Police will again be attending the sessions which are funded by West Yorkshire Community Trust.
Pcso Hunt said: “While the project will be run by Mark Reynolds, myself and Pc Jon Sturdy will be attending to offer support and to speak with the young people involved.
“We want young people to come along to see how boxing can be used as a way of learning new fitness and health skills, as well as channelling aggression in a fun, non-contact way.
“Parents must attend the first session to sign their child to the project, at the end of which, those who take part will receive a medal, certificate and a free one-to-one session with a club boxer.
“The opportunities will be there for people to then continue training at the club, move further into boxing or just use the club as an exercise base.”
The Boxing For Gold sessions will run every Tuesday from 4-5pm over the next three months and are specifically aimed at young people aged between nine and 15.
