ZIMBABWEANS gathered near Huddersfield to demand an end to the rule of Robert Mugabe.

Around 50 people took part in the rally at High Flatts near Birdsedge.

Alan Fish, who lives in the village, organised the event.

He is a supporter of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), which is claiming victory in last month’s presidential elections.

Emily Madamombe, the MDC’s deputy leader in the UK, spoke at the event. She described the party’s history, as well as her experiences as an asylum seeker.

Mr Fish plans to organise another MDC event in summer.

He said: “I hope the party will hold its regional conference in High Flatts, with activists coming from everywhere between Scotland and Birmingham.”
