It was a surreal sight for late evening shoppers on Saturday.

They hurried home with their purchases wondering why the town centre appeared to have been taken over by aliens.

A blood-spattered Buzz Lightyear and all manner of ghostly apparitions were ranged across the town.

The event, known as the Huddersfield Halloween Zombie Slouch, was organised by Zetland publican and Parish founder Christopher Baird, Simon Campbell-Skelling and town centre barfly Roo Sarwar.

The slouch, now in its seventh year, saw the zombies not only hit the streets but many bars too.

Sticking to tradition, they began turning up at the Parish bar from 4pm and then moving through the town until they hit the town’s most haunted pub The Zetland.

The event was all in a good cause too with money raised going to Ruddi’s Retreat, a children’s charity based in Linthwaite.

One of the first to arrive at the Parish was Steve Turner, a 56-year-old father-of-three turned spook, from Dalton.

He said: “At first I thought I had made a mistake and got the wrong night because there was no-one else here when I came in.

“My sons think I’m mad but it is all very enjoyable and for a good cause.”

Joining him at the Parish were Colin Crabtree, 65, from Brockholes and Damien Hunter, a 38-year-old IT worker from Birkby dressed as Buzz Lightyear.

Damien said: “I had the outfit lying around for another event and it seemed perfect for today.

“I spatter myself in tomato ketchup to make it look rather gory. It’s all good fun.”

Roo, who is in her 30s and lives in the town, said: “We are expecting around 150 people to turn up. I have helped Chris with the planning and organisation.”

After leaving the Parish the zombies slouched their way to Five-Bar, Herbert’s, Cotton Factory, Warehouse, Varsity, Rhubarbcafe Bar and the Zetland.
