Thank you for taking an interest in our new school. Opened in September 2011, North Huddersfield Trust School has clear ambitions, as the school grows and take shape, to become outstanding and be parents' first choice for their child's secondary education in the north Huddersfield area.

We already have a strong sense of community within a supportive environment in which respect is required from everyone, towards everyone and everything. A strong sense of purpose and academic rigour permeates all we do and combined with fun and vibrancy, encouraging positive attitudes to learning our students develop into capable young adults.

The plan for the new school is based heavily upon the ethos and approach at our sister school, Holmfirth High School, where outstanding provision has been the norm for many years. Children must feel safe, happy and secure within their school and must enjoy their learning. If these things are in place, then exam success and wider personal development will follow. Good behaviour and a sense of calm and order are fundamental to what we do.

The school has been established as a Trust School and this means that in addition to the normal school leadership and governor groups, the school is supported by a group of partners who form a trust that supports the school.

Trust partners include:

Cummins Turbo-technologies

Deighton and Brackenhall Initiative

Kirklees Active Leisure

Kirklees Council

Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance

Kirklees College

Holmfirth High School

Parents of Black Children Association

University of Huddersfield

University of the First Age

The influence, advocacy and practical support of these partners provides great additionality to the school. The Trust has provided extra opportunities, additional finance and advice and support which has been fundamental to our early success. At the end of our first year of operation pupil numbers are up across the school by 15% and our new Year 7 intake is 55% bigger than the last intake of the predecessor school.

The school has expanded the curriculum to ensure the full range of academic options and supported by its partner school and Kirklees College a wide array of vocational options. As the school has been in operation for just one year, no pupil has had the chance to complete their full secondary schooling there, but already there are encouraging signs of examination result improvement over the predecessor school – examples of this are a rise in the percentage of pupils achieving five A*-C from 44 to 60%; Science A*-C pass rates up from 18 to 62% and 100% A*-C pass rates in Art, Performing Arts and ICT.

Enrichment, as at HHS, through a wide programme of extra-curricular activities is central to what we do to help enthuse and inspire children including sport, dance, drama, music, chess and other games, a debating group, horse riding, and much more.

The school seeks to innovate and has set up the National Centre of Youth Leadership. Based in the Coach House, at the school, we offer training opportunities for the children and staff of our own school and others which encourage the development of pupil leadership skills. We want our pupils to emerge as confident leaders, capable of tackling issues and problems that they face head-on and willing to influence and make a difference within their families, their community and their workplace.

Pupils joining the school in Year 7 in 2013 receive a uniform grant to cover the costs of the bespoke items of uniform and a hand-held learning device. There is access to our Virtual Learning Environment and associated software providing revision and study support materials. Programmes of after school study and 1:1 teaching support along with holiday schools are already well established.
