Built around the turn of the century, The Meadows is one of the three original houses built in New Road, Netherthong.

Current owner Mark Walker has an old photo of the property which shows it surrounded by open land which has been gradually developed for residential use over the years.

Today New Road is a popular residential area, close to the centre of Holmfirth but still enjoying rural views and a village atmosphere.

The Meadows is a double fronted period property which is really easy to find - just look for the two large Monkey Puzzle trees in the front garden and the imposing driveway.

Mark said: “As far as I know the trees are as old as the house. They are slightly different to each other, I think maybe one is male and the other female.’’

Monkey puzzle trees are native to Chile and Argentina and are sometimes described as ‘living fossils’ because of the age of the species.

From outside The Meadows is a very attractive five-bedroom stone property which sits back from the roadside and enjoys views across fields and countryside. At the front there is a large driveway leading to a double garage and the rear garden. To the side of the main house is an extension which at the moment is being used for work purposes but could easily be converted into a self-contained annexe with its own entrance.

The rear garden is home to a hot tub (for sale by separate negotiation) and a log cabin which houses a gym and a sauna. The garden itself, with a central lawned area and patio, is very private and south facing.

Inside the house, there is a great mix of old and new features. Period features such as fireplaces, a ceiling rose, bannister and ornate coving sit side by side contemporary fittings in the bathrooms, kitchen and conservatory.

One of the main features of this lovely house is the original front door and inner doors which feature colourful leaded lights which match a long leaded feature window half-way up the stairs to the first floor.

Once inside this house is surprisingly large and much more spacious than you would first think, having the benefit of a converted loft space which has been made into two bedrooms, a double and a single, which are accessed via a proper staircase.

On the ground floor is a modern kitchen which leads into the conservatory and overlooks the rear garden. There is also a small snug area, a spacious lounge bursting with period features and the extension which has a utility room, office area and shower room which could easily be converted if required for an elderly relative or teenager.

The first floor is home to a guest bedroom as well as an arrangement of rooms which has the feel of a master suite, including a very large master bedroom with a feature tiled fireplace and glorious rural views, a contemporary bathroom which has a freestanding bath tub and a walk-in wardrobe/dressing room.

Mark, who has lived at the house since 1997, is hoping to stay in the Holme Valley but wants to downsize so he can enjoy travelling.

He said: “New Road is a great place to live being close to all the amenities of Holmfirth, local schools, Netherthong village and is on a bus route. This house has been a great entertaining house and people love to visit.

This is a fabulous period property which mixes old and new perfectly and is a great family home on the edge of Holmfirth.

The property is being marketed for offers in the region of £495,000 by W H Brown estate agents 01484 687818.
