Barney Fitzpatrick has achieved his most outstanding tournament win of his fledling tennis career.

The Thongsbridge Tennis Club youngster, who has recently been called up for the Great Britain Under 12 squad to play in Belgium next month, has won a grade two Winter National Tour event at Gosling Tennis Club in Hertfordshire.

Fitzpatrick qualified by winning a grade three event earlier this month, but being younger than most of the players he had to go into the preliminary round and battle with 23 players to earn one of the eight places in the main draw.

Fitzpatrick faced the sternest test in his first match against his fellow GB player Derrick Chen, overcoming his opponent in the match tiebreak 6-4, 6-7 (10-4).

From then on Fitzpatrick never looked back beating Giacomo Revelli 6-2,6-1 in the first round, and then the No4 seed Daniel Martin 6-4, 6-0 to reach the last eight.

Fellow qualifier Cameron Clark was his next victim 6-4,6-1 in the quarter-finals, and he overcame the No8 seed Tom Batchelor 7-6 in the first set of the semi-final before his opponent retired.

Fitzpatrick faced the No3 seed Alexander Grove in the final and won 6-4,6-2.

His younger Thongsbridge clubmate Dominic Vesely played in a WRT Under 9 event in Sunderland, winning his qualifying group comfortably

dropping just 10 points in three matches.

Vesely overcame an older opponent in Marcus Jeffrey, from Scotland, 5-7, 8-6,8-6 in the quarter-finals, but he ran out of steam in the semis, eventually losing to his training partner from Thongsbridge Alex Tikhonov 5-7, 7-9.

Tikhonov narrowly lost the final to Theodore Purkiss, from Gloucestershire, 5-7,4-7.

Tikhonov’s good run of form continued at the City of Liverpool tournament, where he also reached the final after playing some good tennis,

Unfortunately he came up against the same opponent with the same result in the final.

Vesely made up for his semi-final loss at the Shrewsbury Tennis Club Winter G4 tournament, winning all his five of his matches, beating Alex Matjasevich, from the Widnes Tennis Academy, 7-3,6-8, 7-3 in the final and lifting the trophy.

Vesely was joined at the tournament by his teammate Manny Hesmondalgh, who is showing good progress by winning two matches and coming fifth overall.

Ben Horner, in the Under 14 age group, brought home the winners medal from the Cheshire Winter G4, hosted at the Widnes Tennis Academy, beating

Jindrich Kosatik 4-1, 4-0 in the semi-final and Harvey Mottram 4-0,4-1 in the final.

Horner also played at the grade three Tipton Winter Open and narrowly lost to Pierce Widdecombe in the first round after more than two hours play 6-7, 6-2 (11-9) in match that went to a tie break.

Horner showed a great spirit in the consolation draw overcoming Matthew Clegg 6-3,4-6 (10-8) in another match tie break after nearly two and half hours, but went on went on to defeat Alexander Loumidis in the consolation draw final 6-0,6-2.
