Brighouse Town boss Paul Quinn believes promotion to the Evo-Stik (Northern Premier) League is well within his side’s grasp after a comfortable 4-1 home win over Garforth Town kept them third in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

A clinical second-half show kept Town 10 points behind leaders Tadcaster Albion – with six games in hand.

Taddy won 1-0 at home to Worksop Parramore and second- placed Barton Town Old Boys were 6-2 victors at Pickering Town to be seven points above Brighouse having played three games more.

And Quinn, whose team are in League Cup third-round action at home to Long Eaton United on Tuesday (7.45), insisted: “It’s Tadcaster’s and Barton’s to lose and ours to win.

“We’ve just got to keep going and keep picking up the points.”

Brighouse began in blistering fashion, taking the lead in the second minute.

The ever-energetic Ernest Boafo switched the ball from right to left to Luke Gibson, who neatly executed a precise one-two with Tom Matthews to set up Danny Naidole, who slotted home.

Town were dominant but unable to make it count in the first half.

And they were left to rue those missed opportunities early in the second, when Adam Wilson was dispossessed by Simi Oyebanji, who pulled the ball back for Sam Akeroyd to fire home.

That ended former Town goalkeeper Jacob Giles’ club-record run without conceding a goal at 407 minutes.

Brighouse stepped on the gas and after Joe Jagger hit the bar, they were back in front after 66 minutes.

Wilson made amends for his part in the Garforth goal by knocking down a deep corner to strike star Matthews, who turned neatly and rifled a shot into the top corner.

The lead was extended on 82 minutes, when Naidole was brought down by Joe Woodger and Boafo fired in the penalty.

There was still time for Matthews to claim his second goal of the game and 33rd of the season.

James Hurtley brilliantly beat his man on the right flank and squared for Matthews to shoot into an open goal.

Long Eaton are ninth in the Premier Division after a 3-2 win at Albion Sports.

Town’s Ladies team boosted their North-East Regional Women’s League Southern Division title hopes by going top with a 4-2 win at previous leaders Wetherby Athletic.

Amy Hesselden hit a hat trick and Claire Nedham got the other goal for Rob Mitchell’s side, who are top on goal difference with two games in hand.

Town head to Ossett Albion on Tuesday.
