Fern Beaumont and Leah Keyworth of Broad Oak BC are the first winners of the Steve Batler Memorial Huddersfield Under 16 Pairs.

In the final at Marsh Lib, they beat clubmates Elliott Heap and Ben Beaumont 21-12.

Sponsored by Chris Batler, this was the first running of the event as a pairs as it was originally a singles.

There were some very good performances early on, and the crowd were delighted by young brothers Aiden and Ethan Hick.

Only six and seven years of age, they put up a great show against homesters Megan Beresford and Joshua Gough before losing 21-13.

Meanwhile, the big guns of Beaumont and Keyworth were making relentless strides towards the final, beating Shelley pairing Callum Wadsworth and Jessica Mark 21-14, then Scott Shaw and Ethan Wareing (Kirkheaton Con) 21-8.

In the bottom half, Yorkshire county junior, Jack Humpleby, was partnering Kirkheaton Con player Sophie Brown and they were looking good.

They beat Marsh Lib’s sister and brother pairing of Charli Evans and Adam Evans 21-7.

But they came unstuck in the semi-finals, losing out to Broad Oak’s Heap and Ben Beaumont 21-18.

Ben was playing with a brand new set of woods, which were up for sale at one stage as he threw them both in the gutter at one end! But he then decided they were okay after bowling a toucher at the next end.

This set up the final between all four Broad Oak clubmates, but Fern and Leah were just too good against the younger lads, with Leah leading very close, as she had been all through the competition.

Partner Fern backed up her friend with some very good and accurate bowling, winning the final 21-12.

Marsh Lib were thanked for hosting the event so superbly.

It was a double celebration for Fern, as she had been a member of the Yorkshire team that won the British Crown Green Bowling Association Under 18 Team Knockout, at the Grange BC in Warrington.
