AMIDST the rain, there were two extremely tight finishes in the Second Eleven cup competitions.
In the Fired-Up Paddock Shield semi-final at Hoylandswaine, the home side were bowled out by Golcar in 27 overs for 138, Mick Brook taking six for 40 and Jake Lockwood three for 32.
For Swaine, the chief run-scorers were Scott Marsh (47) and Callum Lee (38).
After losing two early wickets, Mark Wilson (20) and Asif Iqbal (28) began to pull it round for Golcar, and with Chris Chapman making 30, but after his dismissal Golcar stuttered and were bowled out agonisingly one run short of levelling the scores with Josh Bird taking three for 35 and Luke Potter three for 22 to book a final spot for Hoylandswaine.
If anything it was even closer at Delph & Dobcross in the second round tie of the Earnshaw Cup, where Emley Clarence must have thought they had the game won when they needed just two for victory in the last over.
Phil Lees (38), Nick Horton (34) and Ian Cotterill (30) had lifted Delph to 190-7 in their 45 overs, but Emley made a good reply with Oliver Bottomley top-scoring with 69 and Gareth Ferguson making 30, and with Mick Howard (22) and Ken Taylor (20no) it looked like a Clarence victory.
The last over was bowled by 14-year-old Daniel Jones, son of first-teamer Warren, and he produced a brilliant double-wicket maiden with a run-out off the last ball to leave Delph the winners by one run.
In the rain-hit League programme, Honley (who were washed out) saw their lead at the top of the Premiership cut by Golcar, who defeated Broad Oak by five runs, while Kirkburton’s title hopes were dented by Armitage Bridge where Mark Williamson and Joel Barker double teamed to rock the Riley Laners with four wickets each, dismissing the visitors for just 72.
Earlier Matthew Pearce (31) and Gareth Peck (30) had scored the bulk of the Bridge’s 120-8 tally, with Josh Ardron and Richard Kettlewell also taking four wickets apiece.
